eSDS? How to use REACH extended Safety Data Sheets

REACH extended Safety Data Sheets - eSDS

Is your company purchasing chemical substances? Then you are probably familiar with Safety Data Sheets (SDS). SDS are globally used to inform users of chemicals substances on how to use them safely for humans and the environment.

You may have noticed that some SDS have recently become much extended. Some SDS have become as large as 200 pages. This article explains why and what your company should do with these so-called extended SDS to remain compliant.

REACH extended Safety Data Sheet

Why do companies receive extended SDS (eSDS)? The reason can be found in REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. This regulation obliges all European producers and importers of chemicals to register their products, and to demonstrate safe use for humans and the environment.

Extended SDS with Exposure Scenarios

The core information how to use chemicals safely is summarized in Exposure Scenarios. These Exposure Scenarios (ES) are added to the traditional SDS and are communicated along the supply chain. The Environment, Health & Safety team from Philips Innovation Services noticed a steady increase in SDS that now include ES, especially for single component products.

Your obligations regarding eSDS

Your company is obliged to make use of the information provided in an eSDS on the safe use of process chemicals purchased and processed. It is mandatory to comply with the eSDS within 12 months after receiving the eSDS.

European and Dutch inspectorates announced that they will focus on eSDS implementation during their investigations. Therefore we recommend that you carefully check and document if your uses are covered by the eSDS and that you implemented the control measures mentioned.
