Dear reader,
Welcome to the new summer issue of Innovation Flash. In this edition we would like to engage with you on typical Accelerate Innovation topics that we address with our clients. Driving for continuous development and improvement in these areas, our aim is to help our clients improve the value and impact of their innovation, as well as nurturing an innovation-friendly culture. The topics in this Innovation Flash are selected because together they highlight the practicalities of valuable innovation and the value of cooperation within (open) innovation.
At Industry Consulting, we are convinced that Innovation generates its full potential when you combine the best insights from various individuals and stakeholders, and apply them in a practical, focused way-of-working, achieving your desired time-to-market objectives with innovations that really matter.
- First we look into new steps in Health and Lean Innovation; an exciting article explaining where principles of Lean product development are translated and applied successfully into Healthcare and Care & Cure environments. - Secondly, we have a Good News announcement to share from the Netherlands. Our senior innovation consultant Elke den Ouden has contributed to the 3rd edition of the book "Goed nieuws uit Nederland".
- As a third topic we would like to share with you practical usability guidelines in product development, as designed by Jasper van Kuijk in association with (amongst others) Philips Industry Consulting.
- Finally, we are proud to announce that we have developed TRIZ trainings specifically for engineers in development or research.
Yet another edition (the 3rd edition) of the book ‘Goed Nieuws uit Nederland’ is out. The book builds on the success of the previous editions. ‘Goed Nieuws uit Nederland’, or roughly translated ‘Good News from the Netherlands’ features 50 inspiring Dutch innovations.
More and more, these innovations are testament to value networks and cooperations between companies, knowledge institutes and other partners. The publisher is the Dutch section of the Product Development & Management Association (PDMA). Philips Industry Consulting’s senior innovation consultant Elke den Ouden and Rob de Graaf are responsible for the editing. Please note that the book itself is in Dutch.

Product manufacturers increasingly have to select from the ever-growing number of available features and functions and make them easily accessible to users.
Together with Océ, Thales and Indes, Philips Industry Consulting is among the companies involved in the Design for Usability project, along with the Netherlands’ three universities of technology. The research project is also supported by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation and forms part of the Innovative Research Programme (IOP) Design for Usability.
The aim of the research project is to reduce the problems users experience with electronic devices, through the development and distribution of design guidelines.
One of the five component projects is being facilitated by Jasper van Kuijk, a recent PhD graduate from Delft University of Technology. Based on his PhD research Jasper van Kuijk has made 25 practical recommendations for industry, which show how product development can be organized so that it helps to create user-centered consumer electronics.
These guidelines will be made available to product developers in the form of a set of cards.
The link provided leads you to the set of cards instrumental for addressing usability in product development practice: 25 practical recommendations (PDF).

TRIZ is a Russian acronym for ‘theory of inventive problem solving’ and focuses on methods and tools for solving specific inventive problems. TRIZ is typically used as a cornerstone of Ideation. Therefore it fits right into Industry Consulting’s Accelerate Innovation practice, Creating Breakaway Innovations for our clients.
Do you want to learn how to analyze complex problems, how to understand and extract underlying causes and conflicts and how to generate new solution strategies in a systematic and process-based way?
Industry Consulting is now offering TRIZ level 1 training sessions. This will allow you to apply and understand the basics of TRIZ and effectively use the methodology to develop your own opportunity creation process.
This training will be given by Christoph Dobrusskin, MA-TRIZ level 3 certified and senior innovation consultant at Philips Innovation Services. For many years Christoph has been using TRIZ in numerous projects and in various industries.
In the fourth quarter of 2011, Christoph will give TRIZ level 1 trainings for Philips colleagues in Eindhoven. Please let us know if you want to be included on the participant list, or if you want to pass this on to your team members.
The level 1 training lasts for three days and is meant for engineers in development or research.
Participants learn the basics of TRIZ and learn to work with a set of tools and methods to solve inventive problems. We encourage participants to bring their own cases to exercise with during the training; creating the most impact and rich learning-experience.
Contact Christoph at industry.consulting@philips.com to join this training and be included on the list.
